17th September 2013 – Successful project collaboration between publishing system leaders and XML comparison specialists lays foundation for technology partnership.

DeltaXML, world experts in XML comparison systems, and Typefi Systems, developers of Typefi® Publish, the world’s leading automated composition software for design-driven single-source publishing, announce a technology partnership to deliver a sophisticated redlining solution in XML publishing workflows.

Redlining is the process of identifying and displaying changes made to a document’s content, structure and formatting. In XML workflows – such as that of international standards organisations, where Typefi Publish is used to produce standards documents in multiple formats from XML source files – this includes identifying changes to a document’s markup without invalidating the XML.

The catalyst for the project was to meet the specific needs of a customer,” explains Chandi Perera, Typefi CEO. “We identified the customer’s requirement to identify and display XML changes among large teams of authors and editors as needing specialist XML redlining skills. DeltaXML’s experience in XML comparison made them the obvious technology partner for the project.

The challenges in implementing a meaningful and usable solution in an XML workflow included: how to identify and filter out trivial changes; how to handle both simple content such as paragraphs and complex content such as tables, equations, initial capitals, figures and lists; and how to render the differences in a way that users such as authors and editors can easily understand.

The collaboration with DeltaXML, combining Typefi’s expertise in single-source publishing software with DeltaXML’s extensive knowledge of XML comparison systems, resulted in a solution that can be applied to any redlining requirement in an XML workflow. “There was a real synergy between DeltaXML and Typefi in developing the redlining standards solution. What is most exciting is its potential – we anticipate many of our other customers, and indeed any organisation publishing with XML, will also benefit from this partnership,” says Mr Perera.

DeltaXML’s Business Development Manager, Nick Mongston, agrees: “Continuing our success working with standards bodies, including OASIS and W3C, we are happy to be integrating our world-leading comparison technology with Typefi’s established publishing workflow. We’re excited that this solution enables companies to move from an existing manual redlining process to a fully automated solution. Our joint solution could not have been achieved with any other technologies and it considerably extends the potential applications of our solutions for managing technical documentation in XML.
